M1 Ice Skating Rink

Assignment

Design a roof over the ice skating rink and the cycling track in Geleen, a small town in the southern province Limburg.

Situation

The ice skating rink is part of a large sports centre, Glanerbrook. In this sports centre you’ll find an indoor ice hockey rink, two sports halls, a 25 meter swimming pool, a subtropical swimming pool and outside swimming pools. In the middle of the complex is a canteen situated, in such a way that one can look over all the different areas of the sports centre. The grandstand of the 400 meter ice rink is also connected to the building as well as the dressing-rooms.

Glanerbrook was opened in 1988 en owned by the community Geleen. In 2001 Laco International BV bought it up.
The complex is in the middle of Geleen, in a city park. The park is surrounded by different types of  residences; villa’s and other detached homes and different types of attached houses. Buildings higher than 10 meters, such as apartments, can’t be found in the area.

Design

The design consists of 12 structural elements that carry the roof which hangs underneath. This special roof is made of honeycomb formed parts. These special parts make it possible to form a corner without using special parts. Because the honeycombs also form the façade, they can be used as toiletunits and grandstands. A tunnel underneath the track makes it possible to get into the dressingrooms of the sports centre.

Because the structural elements are positioned in a special way, on the outside of the tracks are three times more columns than at the inside.
